Hands-on work parties, workshops, and project conversations.

We often organize or facilitate workshops and work parties that educate participants, build community, and increase value for homeowners through many hands on the home.

We offer

Workshops rooted in natural building practice.

  • Building with cob Workshops have focused on walls, benches, earthen ovens and sculptural installations. We teach how to evaluate materials, design for cob, mix, build walls, make arches, sculpt, finish naturally, and fasten doors, windows and roofs.
  • Earthen plasters Workshops have focused on wood framing, FasWall and straw bale projects. Plasters can use materials from the site or neighborhood, with instruction on surface preparation, material assessment, mix ratios and hands-on application.
  • Lime plaster or stucco Lime work introduces history, chemistry, uses, advantages, surface preparation, premix or site-mixed plaster, additives, tools, staging and application rhythm.
  • Natural paints Clay and milk protein are natural and biodegradable binders used in traditional paint finishes to protect and beautify plaster, drywall and masonry surfaces.
  • Other traditional techniques Wattle and daub, straw clay and chip-slip techniques use combinations of cellulose and earth for special spaces and sculptural work.
